Photos Square Butte, Vaughn, Mt

February 13, 2008 / by donnaridgway

We went driving around last night, looking for some nice photos.  The sun was shining on Square Butte, and the land between us and the butte was in shadow.  The sky was dark and brooding as the novels say, and the  butte shone in the late evening light.  It was beautiful.  My photo has lost it's glory in preparing it for web use, but you can see a little of how it was here.

I liked this photo best, the sunlight was stronger, the shadows deeper.  When you ask people around here if this is the Square Butte Charlie Russell painted, some will tell you yes, and some will tell you this is Crown Butte.  I believe this is the Butte from his paintings, it's a little bit unmistakable!  It seems to me, Crown Butte is on down the road to the west.

The butte down the road from this butte, is taller, and the rock crest is higher, it does create more of a "crown" shape than this butte has.  It's also more round, and not as large as this butte, that's some of the reasons I call this one Square Butte and the other the Crown Butte.

The wind is blowing here today, it's rocking the house.  The donkeys don't like it, they pull hay out of their feeder, and the wind takes it down country before they can eat it.  I gave them a good feed of pellets this morning ...

At least it isn't cold, we had to let the fire go out as it got to warm in the night.

Of course, it's never to warm for cats, so the girls are sitting beside the parlor stove, looking at me, then at the wood box, then at the stove door handle...they want their cozy fire going!  The animals around here get what they want most of the time. :)  And they sure know how to tell us what that is.

So good to hear from you and see your lovely photos again! Wonderful country! What an eye you have! I have been thinking of you this winter, wondering if you all were buried in snow, and I'm glad to hear that all is well. The cats and I are weathering the freezing cold here in northwest Ohio. Our hearts are patient, full of dreams of spring.

We've had the craziest winter.  One little snow storm in November.  Then 50 above and sunshine until now, and today it's a blizzard.  But heck, it's Valentines day tomorrow so how long can it stay winter?  We've got it licked now.glad you're all tucked up with the cats!  And the good thing about painting, it makes the time fly by...I never know hours have gone by when I'm painting.  Are you like that too?

I love to go on photo shoots! This is so beautiful.  It has such a vast, open feeling.  Florida can feel closed and creeping, especially when the humidity runs high and the palmettos brush you on all sides.

We drove truck through Florida one week.  It was February, so what fun after driving through blizzards to get there.  We enjoyed it but the cab of the truck dripped!  We didn't think we'd need the air conditioning the first night...
